Best Roofing Materials for DIY Polycarbonate Roofing Projects

There are several options available when it comes to the different types of roofing materials available for roofing projects.

Very few, however, are as versatile, durable and easy to install as polycarbonate roof sheeting. It’s also extremely impact resistant, it allows high levels of light transmission and has an impressive fire rating.

Polycarbonate roof sheeting

Although polycarbonate roofing is recommended for patios, terraces and outside deck areas, it’s not advisable for it to be used to roof an entire home.

DIY Roofing Materials

So, if you are about to start a DIY roofing project at home with polycarbonate sheeting, there are some steps to follow to ensure that you do the job to a standard you’re proud of.

Start with safety

Although scaffolding isn’t mandatory, we advise that it’s used along with other safety gear like a harness and hard hat if you are going to be working on a really high roof.

Always wear the appropriate closed shoes and never walk directly on polycarbonate roofing sheets.

Get it right side up

Polycarbonate sheets are UV protected only on one side of the sheet, so it’s extremely important that you make sure that the protected side is facing upwards when you install them.

You will significantly decrease the lifespan of your sheets if you don’t install them with the UV protected side facing the sun.

There are usually stickers on the side of the sheet that must face the sun, so make yourself aware of which side this is and stack your sheets in a uniform way before you begin.

By doing this, you ensure that your sheets will be installed correctly and you won’t need to fumble around on the roof trying to find the sticker. Adequate preparation makes the job that much easier.

Use purlin tape

By placing purlin tape over the rafters, you prevent expansion noise which can be an unpleasant crackling sound. Purlin tape allows the sheets to expand naturally and quietly.

Cut to size

Your sheets may need to be cut to size and you can do this easily with a circular saw, fine-toothed handsaw or a pair of sharp shears.

Choose the right screws

Polycarbonate sheets expand and contact with different temperatures, so in order to allow this to happen without any issues arising, the correct screw and fixings should be used.

Special polycarbonate screws will cut a hole wide enough to allow the sheets to move, thereby preventing the sheets from buckling.

These screws also have a large piece of rubber on them which will seal the hole, preventing unwanted water leakage.

It’s important to note that your fixings should go through the crests of the sheeting, and should be placed at suitable intervals, according to manufacturer’s standards.

Although you need to tighten the screws adequately in order to prevent rattling, over-tightening can cause excessive stress on the sheets which can cause distortion and other serious issues.
